Recent guest reviews of the Howard Johnson by Wyndham Torrance paint a mixed picture, with some highlighting cleanliness and value while others express concerns about room conditions, breakfast quality, and inconsistent customer service. While some guests appreciate the hotel’s location and affordability, recurring issues with cleanliness, outdated amenities, and responsiveness from staff are evident.
HoJo has been famed as a value priced hotel chain. This time I checked in the same Torrance CA HoJo for the third time within a year. I had experienced the “value” drastically reduced. Since I have stayed there 3 times, I could compare the hospitality experience. The staff was okay for check-in and managed the breakfast area. For other than staff, here are my feedback. First, bed sheets are newer than before. However the pillows were smaller because the fillings were less or compressed because of frequent used. Therefore the pillows were only one third the size of a normal and regular pillows. Housekeepers smartly folded the pillows so they were presentable like naturally inflated. 2, the carpet in the room was soiled and looked desperately needed to be replaced. 3, because the sink was outside the bath/toilet room, by the sink there was a attached to the wall hand wash/bath gel bottle with pump while the bath tub had a attached to the wall shampoo/conditioner gel bottle with pump. My solution was to get some bath gel in a coffee cup cover and took it to taking a bath. Very inconvenient. 4, the breakfast offering had changed or cost cutting drastically. During my stay it offered coffee, hot/cold water, tea bags, Nutri Gran Bars, two waffle machine, preserves and butter, juice machine with two juice choices, and milk. Big difference between past stays and the current one was no yogurt, no cereals, no bagels, no toasts, and no fruit such as oranges and bananas. Cost cutting indeed. 5, the price of room increased at least more than 15%.
We’ve stayed at this property several times and consistently find it clean and well-staffed. We were especially grateful that the team accommodated our request for two rooms close together and away from the elevator. While we enjoyed our stay, a few amenities were missing: the shower only had a shampoo/conditioner combo (no soap), and there was no coffee maker or clock in the room. This wasn't a dealbreaker for us, but it’s something other guests might want to prepare for.
I estimate that I’ve stayed in hotels over 3000 nights in my lifetime…..4 star and sometimes just a simple accommodation. I booked this hotel because I was only going to be there for a few hours. It was an average room in a worn out hotel. But to be fair, the front desk clerks were always friendly and nice. There was no soap in the room for the shower…so that was kinda substandard. My biggest complaint is….I left an item at the hotel. I was only in town for a few hours. I was an hour away (in LA traffic, maybe more) when I started trying to reach the hotel to see if they found the item. No luck getting a live person. left a messsage. And then called a number of times. Could NOT get a live person. I tried calling Wyndham….THEY couldn’t get through to the hotel. Then I spoke to the customer service at Wyndham and THEY couldn’t reach the hotel. Finally someone called me back 30 hours later….(after a number of calls and voicemails)…but by this time, I had left town. Now they decided I needed to send a prepaid shipping label. I COULD have picked up the shoes, if THEY had picked up the phone. I admit that I left the item….but because of the poor customer service, I was not able to pick them up. A GOOD hotel would have offered to send the shoes….even though the problem was on both sides (I admit that). My last phone call with someone in customer service at Wyndham was even worse than my service from the hotel. I would avoid staying at this hotel at all costs….it’s a substandard hotel with WAY LESS than substandard service. And personally, I am going to avoid Wyndham if at all possible. I can just get much better accommodations and service from other properties. And so can you.
Stayed at this hotel about 8 times over the past 12 years. Service has always been okay, but the rooms have always had small issues with things being broken, or not working. Not a great place to bring younger kids. The walls are very thin and they don't have the advertised cribs or pack and plays. Breakfast has been good off and on over the years, but is now very minimal. If you're good with a cereal bar, or yogurt you're golden, otherwise bring your own. If you just need a place to stay for the night the beds are okay, the sheets are clean and there is running water.
Worst hotel I've ever stayed in California. No breakfast, old and smelly rooms. Elevator smells of urine. Customer service, nonexistent. Even tried to come in the room.an hour before check, speaks to the mentality of the workers but also the management. This place needs to be renovated and fitted with new staff.
Don't expect breakfast, just oat, milk, yogurt and coffee. Previously breakfast has been good, not now. Car park is good, generally empty. Clean rooms, 2 times a week they clean the room. You have to change the towels from reception when you need. 24 hour free coffee & water is a plus. I felt safe always, you can walk around any time.
This room was very clean except for the carpet, and the bed was comfortable. The issue's we had are there were no comfortable chairs to sit on, and the room was on the small side for a three night stay. The room we had was pretty much for sleeping only.
Stayed here 4 nights. The room was never cleaned. I had to go pick up new towels everyday and carry them upstairs. There was always parking but very narrow spots. I never heard anyone else around me. The breakfast is coffee, bagels, toast and oranges. Overall not the worst. Not the best. If you don't plan on spending time in the hotel, then this will do.
Thought it was a hotel when I booked it but it is a motel. Stayed for 4 nights. The lobby is on the 2nd floor. Parking was easy and free. Staff was nice. A bit loud in the morning with the housekeeping and other guests walking past the room. Keep your blinds closed or else everyone passing by can see you. Breakfast was bagels and coffee. Nothing fancy. No TV in the lobby area either. There is a Starbucks close by if that’s what you prefer. Super close to the beaches. Rooms a bit outdated but clean. Beds comfy. Overall a decent stay for what we paid.
The people working here very friendly and welcoming. They must really like to clean because the place is super clean. The quality of the air in the room is super imprtant to me and the air in the room was perfect. Brand new window unit and zero dust. Availbilty of a light a breakfast was a nice bonus. I thought with the room rate low as it was that it would be a compromised stay. It wasn't. For sure I would stay here again if in the area.
