Sonesta Select Los Angeles Torrance South Bay receives mixed reviews, with some guests praising its convenient location and reasonable pricing, while others express significant concerns about cleanliness, outdated facilities, and inconsistent service. Recent reviews highlight issues with dirty rooms, mold, plumbing problems, and slow, unhelpful staff.
Friendly but dirty hotel The room had an old smell. I requested a new room, but they were already booked out. There was a stain on the comforter cover. Also, there were small, probably food, stains on the couch and business chair. The bedding was changed out after we let them know about the stain. After my shower, I walked around the hotel room and noticed my bare feet were dirty. I didn’t go in the pool, but it seemed nice. They had a gas fire pit that was nice to sit at. The decor is old, and the place needed more cleaning. The shower faucet dripped with water and it was not being used.
My stay here was disappointing overall. While the hotel has a high rating and advertises amenities like a restaurant and bar, these were misleading — there is no actual restaurant, and the “bar” is just a small cart behind the front desk with a limited selection. The location itself isn’t great, and several aspects of the stay didn’t meet basic expectations. Breakfast is not included and must be purchased separately. The gym’s air conditioning was broken on the first night, making it uncomfortably hot and unusable. The room was decent at first glance, but there were cleanliness concerns, including a questionable red stain on the sheets and visible mold in the tub and on the showerhead. The most frustrating part was the lack of communication and accountability from staff. Housekeeping is only done every three days, which was never explained at check-in. I requested coffee, cups, and towels in person on the first morning — these were never delivered. On the second day, we called to request that our room be serviced (needed towels and trash was overflowing), but it wasn’t. When we followed up that evening, the staff member deflected blame instead of resolving the issue promptly, and we had to ask again before anything was done. Overall, the experience fell well short of expectations and was frustrating from start to finish.
I was completely blown away by how nice and modern the room was compared to how much I paid. The TV was massive and has streaming services, EVERY inch of that room was spotless and when I walked in I was greeted with a pleasant clean smell. My check in was super quick and easy, the front desk attendant was friendly and helpful, and overall this was one of my best solo motel experiences. I was in a pinch and had to choose a motel just for one night, and wow what a seamless, clean and pleasant experience. If I'm ever in one of these situations again I hope there is a sonesta around because wow I was truly blown away by the value and quality last night.
Overpassed my expectations. Lawrence , Michael and all the guys in the front desk were excelent. Room keeping was also very empathic. Clean, affordable, well located, and unbeatable offer cost benefits. Absolutelly recomendable!
Booked this for one night prior to a cruise. At the time it was a considerable value even factoring in cost of transport to the port. At least 100$ cheaper than closer options and as you got closer and things filled up, it remained a good option based on price. Off the 405 - like RIGHT off. - which would make it a great stay if you are wanting accessibility to other areas. Not a lot in the area. Walmart about 3/4 mile walk. Asian grocery store which was fun - I bought $13/lb grapes. lol. Also some basic fast food. Walking is fine as far as sidewalks and I felt safe during the day walking alone but a LOT of traffic to be vigilant of as you walk. Hotel desk staff was friendly and efficient. Checked in quickly. Hotel itself needs some work. It’s just looking a little run down. Not dirty but like basic maintenance is needed all over. Room was nice - I had a king which came with a sofa as well as a little balcony. The view was just the pool however. But nice to be able to look out or get some fresh air. Again maintenance was lacking in the room. It was fine overall but the shower plumbing needed some TLC and there were some big cracks in the tile work. Fridge worked but was crammed in a cabinet too small for it so you had trouble opening the door and it leaked. Problem you have with all hotel rooms is the walls are paper thin. There were some groups of young men - maybe college sports? - staying and they were quite loud in the room next door. I turned into a “Karen” at one point and banged on the wall and they did quiet down some. Then later a bunch were rambunctious in the hall and someone came to reprimand them and then I didn’t hear them anymore. No idea if it was staff or chaperones. Has a Starbucks and a little bar area that serves some food but I didn’t visit. Overall an okay stay for a good value for one night.
We left our reservation a day early. Showed up to our room having no water and when I called down she said people were working on the water and "has no idea when they'll be done", would've been nice to know at check in. Almost immediately after the fire alarm starts going off in the hallway. I call down and "it's a false alarm but I don't know how to turn it off", maybe not the way you should phrase that. Also prebooked through Expedia for a "King room with a sofa bed" and realized we had no sofa bed. Went to the front desk to make sure there at least wasn't a price difference and on their website there isn't but also there was nothing she could do since we went through a third party website and also was told "you already entered you room so we can't move you". (I checked their website and see that every king room description says it comes with a sofa bed so assuming Expedia just adds that to their room label. I think our room used to be a queen and a king mattress was put into it and no one ever updated it) We also saw that there was a foot print under the main sheet on the bed so also unclean and there was nothing they can do? All we were trying to do was travel for the holidays and see our family. Extremely disappointing.
Good location literally right off the freeway, but you have to drive anywhere interesting (LA!). Dated decor. Toilet broke, but was quickly fixed by friendly maintenance staff. Evidently the free bottle of water is for check in only, though only one of the front desk staff told me that while others happily doled them out on request. Decent option and priced fairly. YouTube integration on TV was nice.
Hallway carpeting-flooring needs updating, but is uncharacteristic to the room, other than that, hotel is overall a nice place to stay. Easy access to freeway. We stayed there twice at different times and both stays were nice.
Its my second time staying at this brand hotel. (My First time in LA) The hotel bones are seasoned. They've adequately updated it. The primary halls show traffic patterns and could benefit from a good shampoo. The staff are fantastic. Free parking. No airport shuttle. No free breakfast, but has a small bistro. The hotel is across the street from/within walking distance from Chick-fil-a, Shake Shack and Panera Bread (otherwise right off hwy but feels like an industrial-type location). The rooms do not have usb charging ports (just one in the alarm clock). The rooms were clean and spacious. It was quiet. There were a couple of small stains on the furniture and i feel like the TV channels were limited (although they had all of the basic premium stations... maybe it was that nothing was really on to watch). Would stay again.
Important to mention that I have no complaints about the service! However, the establishment seems very old and the rooms reminded me of Excalibur in Las Vegas. The cleaning wasn't done properly and one of the reviews already mentioned dirty carpets. I won't be returning
